SUBJECT: Quantar IntelliRepeater® (IR) duplicate physical addresses
when adding SER 1Q05 or later version stations or FRUs to an existing older
version site
SYSTEMS
AFFECTED: ASTRO®
SmartZone® 3.0, 3.5 and 4.1
MODEL and OPTIONS AFFECTED:
- T5365 Quantar® with
the one of the following options:
- X898 SmartZone IR ASTRO CAI Trunking
- X999 SmartZone
IntelliRepeater
- CLN1294 FRU
– EPIC-II IR station control module
SYMPTOMS: Adding
multiple new IR channels to an existing site or replacing multiple new Station
Control
Boards (SCBs) at an existing site may cause a
potential communication conflict on the Local Area Network (LAN).
This conflict will render the newly added stations or
SCB FRUs unable to operate compatibly with the existing older version IR’s at
the site. The previously existing
channels (IR’s) will not be affected by this issue.
CAUSE: Stations shipped prior to System Enhancement Release
(SER) 1Q05 used a physical (MAC) address that was factory set in the 08003EXXXXXX
range. With the 1Q05 version
stations, the physical address range changed to 001255XXXXXX. A change in the 1Q05 Quantar software
allows the use of any new or old address assigned by the factory. However, all previous software versions
only allowed the originally assigned block of addresses. When a pre-1Q05 station powered up with
a physical address outside of the 08003EXXXXXX range, the station used a
default address for communication on the IR LAN. When adding a new 1Q05 or later version IR
station or a replacement SCB FRU to an existing IR station, this new IR station
or FRU may have the new physical address embedded on the board.
When the new IR or SCB FRU is added to an existing IR
site, the existing site's software version will be cross loaded to the new IR
or FRU. If the site software version
is pre-1Q05, AND the new IR or FRU board has the later 001255XXXXXX physical
address, the cross loaded software on the new IR or FRU will use the default
08003EXXXXXX physical address. A
conflict on the LAN arises when a second new IR or FRU board is introduced to
an existing IR site. The two (or
more) new stations or FRUs with the later physical address will default to the
same 08003EXXXXXX address, and will be unable to communicate with the rest of
the existing IR’s at the site.
RESOLUTION: When two or more new 1Q05 or later version IR
stations or FRU boards are added to an existing IR site, an upgrade of the
existing IR’s at the site to the SER 1Q05 or later software version will make
all IR stations compatible with both the old and new physical addresses. To determine if this condition exists
within an IR site, the physical address can be read from each station and
compared for any duplicate addresses.
Using the Radio Service Software (RSS), go to the Service menu (F2), and
then Ethernet Parameters (F7) to view the currently used physical address of an
IR station.
Effective
immediately for all new orders, IR Flashport software upgrade kits must be included/ordered
for the existing IR’s at a site when new IR stations are ordered to expand that
site.
For
pertinent orders that have already been accepted, the SER 1Q05 or later Quantar IR software upgrade kit
can be ordered at no charge by entering the
requested data in ALL fields of the following order form (last page of
this document) and emailing it to the System Support Center (SSC) at ccof129@email.mot.com
or faxing it to 847-725-4073.
Run the install.exe program
to install the Flash software on the laptop computer that contains the RSS/FTP
application to upgrade Quantar IR stations. This IR software Flash upgrade kit is
designed to work with all IR stations. Station backplane ID’s are not
required.
As an alternative to the
RSS, Quantar Flash upgrades can be performed with the DLN6455A Configuration
Service Software (CSS), which was designed to service APCO 25 stations/Astro
6.X System releases. The Software
Download feature of the CSS software will allow you to successfully flash any
Quantar/Quantro station with the serial cable or with an Ethernet connection
without the need for the CVN1077A DOS-based FTP utility software; however, it
currently will not allow you to configure/service non-APCO 25 stations.
Note: Before upgrading an IR station, read and
save the station’s codeplug. The SER 1Q05 software version requires a codeplug
version 13 before the station can operate properly. If the current codeplug version of the
station (RSS:Service:Upgrade Codeplug) is an earlier version, perform the
codeplug upgrade procedure by pressing “Enter” in the Upgrade Codeplug RSS
screen, and program the new version codeplug image into the station.
Warning for
Flashing an IR site: When the
flashing of the first IR is completed, the entire site will go into the flash
download (cross-load) mode and no site communications will take place until the
flash download process has been completed and all IR's start Trunking again.
This process takes about 30 minutes to complete.
LABOR
WARRANTY ALLOWANCE: The following standard on-site labor plus
travel (one round trip per IR site) will be approved to Flash software upgrade the affected SmartZone
IntelliRepeater stations that are still in warranty.
·
A maximum of two
(2) hours of on-site labor to Flash upgrade an IR site (all existing IR
stations at the site) via the IR software download/cross-load method and then test
the IR site after the new IR stations and/or SCB FRU’s are added to the
existing IR site.
If any assistance is
needed to perform the Quantar IR Flash software upgrades, please contact the
System Support Center (SSC) at 1-800-221-7144.
