Subject: QUANTAR and QUANTRO ISSUES.

MODELS AFFECTED: T5365 and T5367

ITEMS #1 THRU #3 - All QUANTAR and QUANTRO STATIONS in CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM APPLICATIONS, that SHIPPED prior to APRIL 1994. Reference Serial Numbers of (x x x C S A x x x x) thru (x x x C U F x x x x).

ITEM #4 ---------------- Any SECURENET QUANTAR or QUANTRO using WIRELINE OUTPUT for SECURENET (12Kbit) AUDIO, that SHIPPED prior to NOVEMBER 1994. Reference Serial Numbers of (x x x C S A x x x x) thru (x x x C U V x x x x).

ITEM #5----------------- All QUANTAR and QUANTRO TRUCKING STATIONS, that SHIPPED prior to DECEMBER 1994. Reference Serial Numbers of (x x x C S A x x x x) thru (x x x C U X x x x x).

Problem: 1) Tone Remote Control (TRC) decode reliability with multiple channel operation. It has been found that there are some Centracom applications where channel control at the console is performed thru scrolling action, the station fails to respond to the last TRC sequence which requires a channel change. The failure to decode is due to the fact that the scrolling console can send a HLGT/FT sequence to the station with the spacing of 300 milliseconds between sequences. The station cannot respond to sequences that come at that rate. The station processes the first sequence; it ignores the second sequence. The station properly handles dual function tone sequences. This situation exists in Release 1.00 and Release 2.00 of station firmware. The station firmware, in Release 3.00, has been corrected so that it will properly respond to TRC sequences that come at that rate.

Solution: It is recommended that the station firmware be replaced with the current Release 4.01, if your system is designed for any TRC command to be sent to the station at least 300 msec after a previous command.

Problem: 2) When a strong signal, greater than +20dbm, is injected into the front end of the receiver, the receiver's pre-amp bias level goes below the normal limit of operation. The background diagnostics, which continuously monitor the station operation, sense the threshold crossing and declares a receiver alarm. The condition is logged in the station's status log as an alarm and the receiver is shut down. When the strong signal is removed, the background diagnostics sense that the pre-amp bias voltage is again within the proper operating range and the receiver is restored to service after three minutes. This mode of operation exists on both Release 1.00 and Release 2.00. The operation of the background diagnostics has been changed in Release 3.00. The diagnostics will no longer shut down the receive function when the diagnostic alarm is encountered. However, the condition is recorded in the station's status log as an alarm so that the user knows that the condition exists. Thus, when the receive signal is greater than +20dbm, the receive function is not terminated and there will not be a delay in service restoration when the strong signal is removed.

Solution: It is recommended that the station firmware be replaced with the current Release 4.01. Problem: 3) When configured for Spectra Tac operation, the station may unsquelch even if a receive signal is not present and place receive noise on the wireline. This situation occurs at the end of a current reception. There is a 20 millisecond window where the station mutes the RX wireline before putting status tone back on the RX wireline. If carrier is detected in this window, the station unsquelches and remains unsquelched even if the carrier goes away. This situation is typically encountered during periods of high fade receptions or receptions from fringe areas. Normal operation is restored with the next reception, provided the window is not hit. Unsquelching during the window has been removed with Release 2.00 and subsequent releases.

Solution: It is recommended that the station firmware be replaced with the current Release 4.01.

Problem: 4) Station wireline has audio holes, even during strong signal coded calls. If the station is a repeater the audio hole is apparent only in wireline audio to the console and not in the transparent in-cabinet repeated audio, and may be more or less pronounced depending on the source of Securenet into the station receiver. Audio holes are typically short, about 100 to 200 milliseconds but not more than 2 seconds in duration, and is propagated as loss of code detect through Securenet Digital Voice Modems (DVMs), Console Interface Units (CIUs) and Digitacs, causing missed syllables or words at the console or voted repeat audio. This situation occurs in all releases thru Release 3.10.

Solutions: There are several of known causes for these audio holes, listed in order of severity; A) Quantar/Quantro Wireline board jumpers. DC blocking capacitors used to isolate transformer primary from DC currents (used with DC remote control) are in place as the station ships from the factory to protect the transformers. If Securenet operation is desired, bypass the DC blocking capacitors using wireline board jumpers. Proper jumper positions for Securenet are: "Normal" position for jumper JU1010 (4 wire audio), and "Alternate" for jumpers JU1011 and JU1012 (bypasses DC blocking capacitors). JU1011 is in the "Alternate" position when the header connects the upper two pins, and JU1012 is "Alternate" when the header is connecting the lower two pins when the board is viewed in its normal vertical position.

B) Console Interface Unit TRC board jumper (JU209). This jumper 0 ohm resistor is normally in place for Half Duplex CIU's. In Full Duplex CIU's, if in place, it can cause audio holes when Quantar or Quantro station is used in the system. Make sure this jumper resistor is removed in Full Duplex CIU's.

C) Quantar/Quantro Firmware. In some cases, even after the above items have been addressed, some audio holes may still be seen in systems with firmware prior to Station Control Released 4.01. Firmware revisions in the Quantar/Quantro address this by changing the way the wireline 12 Kbit data is clocked, making it easier for other Securenet products to lock on to the 12 Kbit data. If you suspect this problem exists please contact Product Services for replacement firmware. Release 4.01 requires that both the Wireline Module Hardware Kit number and the Station Control Module Hardware Kit number be at least Issue B or greater. If your station has issue A or earlier, then contact Product Services, (708) 576-0180, for assistance.

Problem: 5) Whenever a call is assigned to talk groups TG1 or TG100 and the talk group call is less than 2 seconds, The call goes through but a TSTAT failure is logged on the station. The TSTAT failure causes the 6809 controller to fail the channel. The channel is retested 5 minutes later, found good, and brought back into service. This condition exists in Releases 2.0, 3.0, and 3.1.

Solution: It is recommended that the station firmware be replaced with the current Release 4.01.
