Bulletin
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
COMMERCIAL, GOVERNMENT & INDUSTRIAL SOLUTIONS SECTOR
1301 E. ALGONQUIN ROAD

SRN # S-0012
APC # 225, 360, 448, 509, 525, 537
547, 590, 675, 677, 680, 732, 743
DATE: AUGUST, 2000
EXPIRES: AUGUST 31, 2001

SUBJECT: QUANTAR, AC POWER SUPPLIES EMI COVERS.
MODELS AFFECTED: T5365A, T5367A QUANTAR, T5541A DATA BASESTATION, T5770A COMPARATORS, AND T5417A IDEN BASESTATION.
SYSTEMS AFFECTED: DATA, CONVENTIONAL, AND TRUNKING

MODULES AFFECTED:

CPN1047B, CPN1048B, CPN1049B/C AND CPN1050C/D POWER SUPPLIES.
( Manufactured between April 27, 2000 through June 5, 2000 )

SYMPTOM: Due to an error in manufacturing of EMI cover in the power supply, it is possible that the cover could deflect or pierce the insulation of the input AC line and neutral conductors. Should the EMI cover pierce the input AC power conductor insulation, depending on which conductor (line or neutral) contacts the shield, either a branch circuit breaker will trip or a small current can flow into safety earth ground (green wire). If current flows in the neutral to earth ground path, some erratic station operation could occur, such as degraded hum and noise.

WARNING: There is a risk of shock in a non-code-wired facility and/or improper grounded station.

CAUSE: A correctly designed EMI cover is slotted to avoid contact with the AC input and does not have RFI "fingers" above the AC conductors. On the incorrectly manufactured covers that are the subject of this Bulletin, the "fingers" are above the insulated AC conductors, and these "fingers" could come in contact with the AC mains power. Incorrectly manufactured EMI covers were installed in Quantar, Data Basestations and Comparator's AC power supplies. Both covers have the same part numbers (pt. no. 15D85034U11). The only way to identify the suspect covers is to visually inspect the cover, refer to samples below.

Correct Cover Incorrect Cover

RESOLUTION: Defective EMI covers MUST be replaced.

SUSPECT STATION IDENTIFICATION: Defective EMI covers could possibly exist in some but perhaps not all the stations with the serial numbers listed below. It will be necessary to inspect each unit to determine if the cover needs to be replaced.

PROCEDURE TO IDENTIFY, INSPECT AND REPLACE EMI COVER:

  • Determine if any of your customers have stations on the above list.
  • If they do, before going to the site, call System Support Center @ 1-800-221-7144 and request, at no cost, EMI covers to carry with you to replace any defective covers you may find for that customer site. At that time, the System Support Center will open a case to track any defective covers you may discover.
  • After receiving the covers, visit your customer sites to inspect the stations.
  • TURN OFF AC POWER TO THE STATION prior to beginning your on site inspection.
  • Remove the power supply from the Quantar chassis.
  • Remove the power supply unit cover.
  • When the unit cover is removed, the EMI cover is plainly visible near the AC mains inlet connector.
  • The EMI cover has a shiny rectangular shape of approximately 3.0"x 4.5" and a "X" shaped raised ridge across the top.
  • A defective cover can be readily sighted by noting the closeness - perhaps touching - of the cover's spring fingers to the insulated AC "Fast-On" connectors that carry AC from the AC power inlet into the power supply circuitry.
  • Properly made covers HAVE NO spring fingers in the area of the AC connector.
  • Replace the incorrect cover.
  • Restart station.
  • Call the System Support Center, refer to the case number that was opened and supply a list of serial numbers of stations inspected and serial numbers of stations where the EMI covers were replaced.
  • Submit warranty claim.

Authorized Motorola Service Shops will be allowed 15 minutes labor time per station to inspect, and if required install the new EMI covers, plus travel. Servicers should submit a standard labor warranty claim form and make reference to this bulletin number.
