DATE: April 2001
EXPIRES: NA

SUBJECT: Quantar Data Base Station users experiencing longer than expected transmission times/duplicate inbound status messages.

SYSTEMS AFFECTED: Private DataTAC Intermittently keyed, Single Frequency Reuse (SFR) stations.

MODEL/OPTION AFFECTED: Quantar Data Base Station T5365A with option X399_C.

SYMPTOM:

Longer than expected transmission times. This is due to the radio and modem not synching up properly and causing retries on the network to successfully deliver the message.

Duplicate status messages. This occurs because status messages, by design, do not have sequence numbers, so the Radio Network Controller (RNC) is unable to detect that a duplicate was sent because of a retry. The retry is happening because the device is not decoding the ACK from the base station, as described below.

DESCRIPTION: The Network Configuration and Optimization Guide (NCOG) - 68P81099E55E reflects an incorrect parameter value for the data base station (DBS) in an SFR-Single Frequency Reuse configuration- (page 5-69, figure 5-60). The SyncLen1 [62] setting identifies the number of symbols to output during the symbol sync interval prior to frame sync at the beginning of each outbound transmission. Without appropriate amount of symbol sync, the radio/modem cannot synchronize with the outbound transmission. Therefore, packets can be missed by the radio/modem requiring the RNC to retry the packet. Current release of the NCOG specifies this value should be 18 hex (this was in error) - the appropriate value should be 40 hex for best operation.

RESOLUTION: Change the parameter for each SFR base station remotely using an RNC console session.

PROCEDURE: From an RNC console session, enter the following for each SFR site:

1. RNC>bsccons <site index>

2. DBS [site index] > sp (to set personality)

3. Set_personality > 62 40 (to change the SyncLen1 parameter to the correct value)

4. Set_personality > x (to exit setting personality)

5. Answer Y to the change personality prompt

6. DBS [site index] > sm (to enter service mode)

7. DBS [site index] > xr (to cold start the base station)

8. RNC>

Repeat the above procedure for each SFR base station
